Hayata first described this species in the genus Cleisostoma without indicating exact locality. The figures of the lip and pollinia given by Hayata showed different characters from the species of Cleisostoma. Although the species was transferred to Sarcophyton by Garay, it is excluded in this treatment due to the lack of specimens and absence of any referrable plants collected so far.
